The construction and inspiration for this project arose from my experience as both a dancer and a budding psychologist, combined with the research conducted by Cash & Green, and Laura Raucher's thesis.

Past Research

The societal standard is often internalized by females, and can result in the development of eating disorders , such as; anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Laura Raucher, 2000

â€‹Conducted a study, at the University of Oregon, for her Master’s Thesis. Raucher’s interest was in the disturbance that may be present in ballet dancers in their perception of their body. She also questioned whether the dancers suffered from a disturbed body image, or dissatisfaction. This resonated with me. As a dancer, I often feel as though what I see in the mirror is different than what my peers see, and vice versa. Raucher conducted studies that involved participants choosing their self-selected, actual, ideal, and feel images, from a series of BMI based images. She found both populations of dancers and non-dancers to be dissatisfied with their bodies, but found a more significant level of dissatisfaction in dancers. Her design and findings inspired me to put my own spin on her study.
